Connect Google Chat

Link your Google Workspace account to bring your Google Chat conversations into Element.

For: everyone with a Google Workspace account

Link your Google Chat account, and your Google Chat conversations appear in Element as rooms.

Before you start

  • You need a Google Workspace account, the kind of Google account your company manages (for example name@yourcompany.com). A free personal Gmail account doesn't work with this bridge.
  • Open Element on a computer if you can. Signing in is easier there.

Link Google Chat

  1. In Element, start a direct chat with @googlechatbot:<your server>. Your server address is on your dashboard under Your Matrix login → Server.
  2. Send the message login.
  3. Follow the bot's instructions to sign in with your Google Workspace account.
  4. Wait for the bot to confirm that you are signed in.

Your Google Chat conversations then start to appear in Element as rooms.

Good to know

  • Each person links their own account. Your colleagues don't see your Google Chat conversations.
  • Google Chat keeps working. You can go on using it in the browser or the Google app.
  • Unlink: send logout to googlechatbot.

If something goes wrong

  • The sign-in doesn't work: check that you use your Workspace (company) account, not a personal Gmail account.
  • The login didn't finish: send login again and start over.
  • Messages stopped arriving: see A bridge stopped working.
