For: everyone
Link your Telegram account once, and your Telegram chats appear in Element as rooms. You sign in with your phone number, just like on a new Telegram app.
Before you start
- You need the phone number of your Telegram account.
- Keep Telegram open on a device where you're already signed in. Telegram sends the login code there.
Link Telegram
- In Element, start a direct chat with
@telegrambot:<your server>. Your server address is on your dashboard under Your Matrix login → Server. - Send the message
login. - When the bot asks for it, send your phone number in international format, for example
+39 333 1234567. - Telegram sends you a login code. Send this code to the bot.
- If you have set a Telegram password (two-step verification), the bot asks for it too. Send it to the bot.
The bot confirms when the link works. Your chats then start to appear in Element as rooms.
Good to know
- Telegram is linked in Element, by chatting with
telegrambot. There is no Telegram button in the portal; the portal only shows whether the bridge is working (Settings → Bridges). - Never share the code with anyone else. Only send it to
telegrambotin your own Element chat. Telegram also warns you about this. - Your Telegram apps keep working. You can go on using Telegram on your phone at the same time.
- Unlink: send
logouttotelegrambot. You can also end the session in Telegram under Settings → Devices.
If something goes wrong
- The code doesn't arrive: check Telegram on your other devices first, the code usually arrives there as a message from Telegram.
- The code expired: send
loginagain and start over. - Messages stopped arriving: see A bridge stopped working.
