Edit or delete a message

For: everyone

Sent a message with a typo, or to the wrong chat? You can edit or remove your own messages at any time.

Edit a message

In the browser / on the computer

1. Move the mouse over your message.
2. Click Edit (the pencil icon), or open Options (the three dots) and choose Edit.
3. Change the text and press Enter to save.

Tip: press the Up arrow key in an empty message box to edit your last message.

On the phone (Element X)

1. Press and hold your message.
2. Tap Edit.
3. Change the text and send it.

The message then shows "(edited)" next to it.

Delete a message

In the browser / on the computer

1. Move the mouse over your message.
2. Click Options (the three dots) and choose Remove.
3. Optionally enter a reason, then confirm.

On the phone (Element X)

1. Press and hold your message.
2. Tap Remove message and confirm.

In its place, everyone sees "Message deleted".

Good to know

• People may already have read the message or seen it in a notification before you changed or removed it.
• You can only edit your own messages. Admins and moderators can also remove other people's messages in their room, depending on the room's Roles & Permissions. See Room roles: admins and moderators.
• Deleting a photo or file message removes it from the chat for everyone.
