Change your name, picture, language and theme

For: everyone

Your colleagues see your display name and profile picture next to your messages. You can change them at any time, together with the language and the look of Element. Your username (for example @marco:8e43f5db6a.matrixhost.eu) stays the same.

In the browser or on the computer

Name and picture

1. Click your profile picture at the top left.
2. Click All settings.
3. On the first tab (Account), change your Display name.
4. Click your picture to upload a new one.
5. Save if Element asks you to.

Language

1. In All settings, find the Language setting (on the Preferences or General tab, depending on the version).
2. Choose your language. Element reloads in the new language.

Light or dark mode

1. In All settings, open Appearance.
2. Choose Light, Dark, or the option to match your system.

On the phone (Element X)

Name and picture

1. Tap your profile picture at the top left.
2. Tap your name at the top of the settings.
3. Change your display name or tap the picture to choose a new one.
4. Tap Save.

Language and theme

Element X uses your phone's language. Light or dark mode also follows your phone, so change both in your phone's settings. Some versions also offer an appearance option in the Element X settings.

Good to know

• The display name the owner entered when creating your account is just a starting point. You can change it yourself.
• The portal (matrixhost.eu) is in English. Element itself is available in many languages.
• Changes to your name and picture appear for your colleagues after a moment.
