Change room settings

Rename a room, set a topic and picture, decide who can join, and find roles, notifications and encryption.

For: admins and members

Every room has its own settings: name, topic, picture, who may join and who may do what. Anyone can look at them; changing most of them needs the admin or moderator role in that room. See Room roles: admins and moderators.

Open the room settings

In the browser / on the computer

  1. Open the room.
  2. Click the room name at the top, then Settings.

On the phone (Element X)

  1. Open the room.
  2. Tap the room name at the top to open Room info.

What you can change

  • General: the room name, the topic (a short description shown under the name) and the room picture.
  • Security & Privacy: who can join the room and who can read old messages. For team rooms, keep it on Invite only, or choose Space members if the room belongs to a space. Encryption is also shown here.
  • Roles & Permissions: who is admin or moderator, and who may send messages, invite people or remove messages.
  • Notifications: how this room notifies you. See Choose what notifies you.

On the phone, you find the same areas in Room info, for example Security & privacy, Roles & permissions and Notifications.

Leave a room

  • In the browser: in the room list, open the room's menu and choose Leave room.
  • On the phone: in Room info, tap Leave room.

Good to know

  • New rooms and direct messages are end-to-end encrypted. Once encryption is turned on, it can't be turned off.
  • Avoid Anyone for rooms with internal information. Federation is on, so a public room could be found and joined by people on other Matrix servers.
  • If you are the only admin and leave, nobody can change the settings any more. Give a second person the admin role first.
