Room roles: admins and moderators

Who can manage a room, how to make a colleague admin or moderator, and how this differs from the portal owner.

For: admins and members

There are two kinds of "admin" in MatrixHost, and they do different jobs:

  • The account owner manages the whole server in the portal: creating users, resetting passwords, billing. There is one owner: the person who bought the plan, with the chat account admin.
  • Room admins and moderators manage a single room in Element: its name, who can join, who can post. Anyone can have these roles in a room, and they don't give access to the portal.

Who is admin of a room?

Whoever creates a room is its admin. They can then give roles to other people in the room.

Make a colleague admin or moderator

In the browser / on the computer (Element)

  1. Open the room.
  2. Open the room settings: click the room name at the top, then Settings.
  3. Go to Roles & Permissions.
  4. Choose the person and give them a role, for example Admin or Moderator.
  5. Save if Element asks you to.

On the phone (Element X)

  1. Open the room and tap its name at the top.
  2. Look for the roles and permissions section in the room details.
  3. Choose the person and the role.

If you can't find the option on your phone, do it in the browser: the result is the same everywhere.

What the roles are for

  • Admin: can change everything in the room, including other people's roles.
  • Moderator: helps keep order, for example removing messages or people from the room.
  • In Roles & Permissions you can also decide who may do what, for example who can send messages or invite others.

Good to know

  • Give at least two people the admin role in important rooms, so the room stays manageable if someone is away or leaves.
  • Room roles don't let anyone create accounts or reset passwords. That is always done by the account owner in the portal.
