Reply, react and use threads

For: everyone

In a busy room, it helps to show which message you are answering. Element gives you three tools:

• Reply: quotes the original message above your answer.
• Reaction: an emoji under a message, for a quick "OK" or "thanks".
• Thread: a side conversation attached to one message, so the main room stays easy to follow.

In the browser / on the computer

Move the mouse over a message. A small toolbar appears on the right.

Reply

1. Click Reply (the arrow icon).
2. Type your answer and send it.

React

1. Click React (the smiley icon).
2. Choose an emoji.

Click the same emoji again to remove your reaction.

Start or continue a thread

1. Click Reply in thread.
2. A panel opens on the right. Type your message and send it.

To see all threads in a room, click Threads at the top of the room.

On the phone (Element X)

1. Press and hold a message.
2. Tap an emoji at the top to react, or tap Reply or Reply in thread.
3. Type your message and send it.

Mention someone

Type @ followed by the first letters of the name, for example @mar, and pick the person from the list. They get a notification, even if they've limited their notifications to mentions.

Good to know

• Messages in threads are encrypted just like the rest of the room.
• If you want to change or remove your own message, see Edit or delete a message.
