For: everyone
You can use Element on as many devices as you like at the same time, for example the phone app, the desktop app at work and the browser at home. Your chats and messages are the same everywhere.
Add a new device
- Install or open Element on the new device: phone or computer.
- Sign in with your server address, username and password.
- Confirm it's you: accept the request on a device where you are already signed in and compare the emojis, or enter your recovery key.
- Wait a moment while your messages load.
Each device you sign in on is a session. Verifying it lets it read your encrypted messages. See Verify a new phone or computer.
Good to know
- Always verify new devices. An unverified device can show "Unable to decrypt" instead of your messages. See Fix "Unable to decrypt" messages.
- Notifications arrive on every device where you are signed in. You can set them separately on each device. See Notification settings.
- Bridges (for example WhatsApp) belong to your account, not to one device. Once linked, your bridged chats appear on all your devices.
- To remove a device you no longer use, sign it out. See See and sign out your sessions.
- Keep at least one device signed in, or keep your recovery key safe. That way you never lose access to your encrypted history.
