Your data, location and GDPR

Where your data is stored, who can read it and how MatrixHost supports your GDPR obligations.

For: everyone

MatrixHost is built for European businesses that need to know where their data lives.

Where your data is stored

  • Your server and all its data are hosted in the EU, in Germany.
  • Your backups are encrypted and also stored in the EU.
  • Each customer has their own private server. Your data is not mixed with other customers' data.

Who can read your messages

  • Direct chats and private rooms are end-to-end encrypted by default. Only the people in the chat can read them.
  • We (MatrixHost) cannot read encrypted messages. This also means we cannot recover a lost recovery key. See What we can see.

GDPR and the DPA

Good to know

  • Media files (images, videos, files) are removed from the server after 365 days. Text messages are kept.
  • If you chat with people on other Matrix servers (federation), copies of those conversations are also stored on their servers.
  • Bridged chats (WhatsApp, Signal and others) also pass through those services, under their own terms.
