For: everyone
You chat with Element. It comes in three versions, and you can use several at the same time: your messages appear everywhere.
| Where | App | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Browser | Element Web | Getting started right away, nothing to install |
| Computer | Element Desktop | Daily work, notifications on Windows, macOS and Linux |
| Phone | Element X | iPhone and Android |
Before you start
- Your server address, for example
8e43f5db6a.matrixhost.eu. The account owner finds it on the dashboard under Your Matrix login; team members get it from their admin. - Your username (for example
marco) and password.
In the browser (Element Web)
- Open
https://element.followed by your server address, for examplehttps://element.8e43f5db6a.matrixhost.eu. - Click Sign in.
- Enter your username and password, then click Sign in.
On the computer (Element Desktop)
- Download Element from element.io/download and install it.
- Open it and choose to sign in.
- When it asks for the server, enter your server address.
- Enter your username and password.
On the phone (Element X)
- Install Element X from the App Store or Google Play.
- Tap Sign in manually. If the app suggests another server, choose change account provider.
- Enter your server address, for example
8e43f5db6a.matrixhost.eu, and continue. - Enter your username and password.
- If you are already signed in on a computer, confirm the new device: accept the request on the computer and compare the emoji, or enter your recovery key.
Good to know
- Always sign in with your username, not your email address.
- The first time you sign in anywhere, save the recovery key. On every further device you confirm it's you with another signed-in device or with that key. Until then, older messages may show as "Unable to decrypt".
- If your company set up its own address (for example
chat.company.com), you can use that address to open Element and sign in instead. - "Cannot reach homeserver" usually means the server address has a typo. Check it and try again.
