What counts as a user

Which accounts count towards your plan's number of users, and which don't.

For: the account owner (admin)

Your plan's user number is the number of accounts on your own server.

What counts

  • Every account you create in Settings under Users, for example @marco:8e43f5db6a.matrixhost.eu.
  • Your own account, admin.

You can see all of them in the Users table in Settings.

What doesn't count

  • People from other Matrix servers you chat with, for example someone at @anna:matrix.org. They have their own account on their own server. See Invite external guests.
  • Bridge bots, such as whatsappbot or signalbot, and the people you reach through bridges (your WhatsApp or Signal contacts).
  • The AI assistant @ai.

Example

You have a 10-user plan. You, 6 colleagues and 2 people from a partner company on matrix.org chat together, and you use the WhatsApp bridge. Your server has 7 accounts (you and your 6 colleagues), so you use 7 of your 10 users.

When your team grows

If you need more accounts, move to a bigger plan. See Change your plan.
