Organise rooms with spaces

Use a space to group your team's rooms in one place, so colleagues find them easily.

For: admins and members

A space is a folder for rooms. When your team has several rooms, for example General, Sales and Projects, a space keeps them together. Colleagues who join the space see all its rooms in one place.

Create a space

Creating a space is easiest in the browser or in Element Desktop.

  1. In the narrow bar on the far left, click the + button (Create a space).
  2. Choose Private, so only people you invite can join.
  3. Enter a name, for example your company name, and click Create.
  4. When Element asks who the space is for, choose Me and my teammates.
  5. Follow the steps to create the first rooms, or skip them and add rooms later.

Add rooms to the space

  1. Click the space in the bar on the left.
  2. Next to the space name, open the menu (right-click the space icon also works).
  3. Choose to add a room: either Add existing room or create a new one.
  4. Select the rooms and confirm with Add.

Invite colleagues to the space

  1. Open the space menu and choose Invite.
  2. Type your colleagues' usernames, for example marco.
  3. Click Invite.

Once they join, they see the space in their bar on the left and can join its rooms.

On the phone (Element X)

Spaces you belong to appear under Spaces in Element X. Open a space to see its rooms and join them.

Good to know

  • A room can belong to more than one space.
  • Leaving a space doesn't automatically remove you from its rooms.
  • In a room's settings under Security & Privacy, you can allow Space members to join the room without a separate invitation. See Change room settings.
