For: everyone
Element has voice and video calls built in, one-to-one or with a group. Calls run on your own server; you don't need a separate video tool.
Before you start
- A microphone, and a camera for video. Headphones help avoid echo.
- The first time, your browser or phone asks for permission to use the microphone and camera. Choose Allow.
Call one person
In the browser / on the computer
- Open your direct message with the person.
- At the top right of the chat, click Voice call or Video call.
- Wait for your colleague to answer.
On the phone (Element X)
- Open the direct message with the person.
- Tap the call button at the top right.
Call a whole room
- Open the room.
- Click or tap the video call button at the top right.
- Your call starts. The others see that a call is running and can click Join.
Answer a call
When someone calls you, Element shows the incoming call with buttons to accept or decline. In a room call, just click Join at the top of the room.
During the call
- Use the buttons at the bottom to mute your microphone, turn your camera on or off, and hang up.
- In the browser and Element Desktop you can also share your screen. See Share your screen in a call.
Good to know
- Calls work between all colleagues on your server.
- WhatsApp calls can't be answered in Element. If you use the WhatsApp bridge, set up an automatic reply for callers. See Redirect WhatsApp calls.
- If you see "You do not have permission to start video calls", ask a room admin to allow calls in the room's Roles & Permissions.
