Use your own domain

Open your server and Element under your own address, such as chat.acme.com.

For: the account owner (admin)

Every plan includes one custom domain. With it, you and your team open your server and Element under your company's own address, for example chat.acme.com, instead of 8e43f5db6a.matrixhost.eu.

Before you start

  • You need access to the DNS settings of your domain (often at the company where you bought the domain).
  • Choose a subdomain, for example chat.acme.com.
  • Your server address is on your dashboard under Your Matrix login → Server.

Steps

  1. Open Custom Domain in the portal.
  2. Enter your address in the Domain field, for example chat.acme.com.
  3. At your DNS provider, add a CNAME record: name chat.acme.com, target your server address, for example 8e43f5db6a.matrixhost.eu. (Alternatively, an A record to the IPv4 address the portal shows.)
  4. Wait a few minutes until the DNS change is live. The status shows Awaiting DNS.
  5. Click Verify DNS. The status changes to DNS verified.
  6. Click Activate. The status shows Activating while a security certificate is issued automatically, then Active.

What changes, and what doesn't

  • Changes: the address you use to open the server and Element. Sign-in and the app are served on your domain.
  • Stays the same: user IDs. They remain @name:8e43f5db6a.matrixhost.eu. A Matrix ID can't be changed after it is created.
  • The matrixhost.eu address keeps working as well.

Remove the domain

Click Detach on the same page. Your server stays reachable at its matrixhost.eu address.

If something goes wrong

  • "No CNAME or matching A record found for …": the DNS record is missing or not live yet. Check it at your DNS provider, wait a little and click Verify DNS again.
  • "… CNAME points to … (expected …)": the CNAME has the wrong target. Change it to the address shown as expected.
  • "Custom domain is already in use": this domain is already connected to another server. Choose a different subdomain.
  • "matrixhost.eu subdomains cannot be used as custom domains": use a domain you own.
  • Status Failed: check the DNS record and try again. If it keeps failing, contact support.
